WEEKDAY CUSTODIAN
Location: Wesley United Church
Purpose of the Position
The Weekday Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of Wesley United Church and Wesley House. The Custodian supports the ministry of the church by ensuring that facilities are welcoming, well-maintained, and ready for worship, programming, and community use.
Working Relationships
The Custodian works cooperatively with all staff, volunteers, renters, and community partners of Wesley United Church.
Scope of Responsibility
The Custodian is responsible for:
- The overall cleanliness and upkeep of interior and exterior spaces.
- Basic building operations and monitoring of systems (including heating).
- Minor maintenance and reporting of larger repair needs.
- Security of the building.
- Supporting special events and facility use.
Availability
The Custodian is expected to be available for additional duties related to weddings, funerals, concerts, rentals, and special events. Some events occur outside regular working hours and are compensated separately.
Workplan (Operational Duties)
1. General Cleaning
- Vacuum all carpeted areas at least weekly or more often as needed.
- Sweep, mop, and clean non-carpeted areas at least weekly or more often as needed.
- Clean all washrooms daily and replenish supplies.
- Dust church areas (sanctuary, balcony pews, window wells, stair rails) at least weekly.
- Dust offices at least weekly.
- Clean interior and exterior windows at least seasonally (minimum twice per year) or more often as needed.
- Clean window blinds at least seasonally.
2. Exterior Maintenance
- Daily: Clean up around the exterior of the church, including litter, debris, and general appearance.
- Cut lawns and maintain lawn equipment during growing season, at least weekly or as needed for safety and appearance.
- Trim bushes and shrubs as needed during growing season, at least once per season.
- Pick up trash around church yard and Wesley House daily.
- Snow removal from entrances, sidewalks, Wesley House porch and stairs; apply salt as needed.
- The city clears perimeter sidewalks; an outside company clears the parking lot.
- Ensure adequate salt, buckets, and shovels are available at each entrance.
- Maintain general exterior safety and accessibility throughout the year.
3. Minor Repairs & Maintenance
- Maintain a list of minor repairs and complete them as needed, with routine review at least weekly.
- Maintain a list of major repairs and submit to the Administrator monthly.
- Respond to minor repairs and small emergencies at Wesley House as they arise.
- Report major repairs or emergencies immediately to the office or Administrator.
- Perform small maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and addressing minor plumbing issues as required, with safety and building function as priority.
4. Security
- Check all fire doors, windows, and exterior doors and secure them when leaving each day.
- Ensure interior doors are closed for fire safety, security, and heating daily.
- Check and sign off fire extinguisher tags monthly.
- The Custodian is normally first on the call list for off-hours issues (e.g., alarm calls from Damar).
5. Boiler / Building Systems
- Monitor and adjust heating in all areas daily during heating season.
- Ensure heat is on for scheduled activities and events (e.g., Sunday services, AA meetings, special events).
- Inspect boiler and piping regularly (at least weekly) and report any problems immediately to the Administrator.
- Turn boiler on/off seasonally as required.
6. Waste, Supplies & Facilities (Miscellaneous)
- Empty indoor garbage containers daily.
- Place recycling and green bins weekly.
- Place garbage for collection every other week.
- Sort recycling as required.
- Maintain adequate supplies of cleaning products, washroom items, and light bulbs with inventory checked at least weekly.
- Maintain kitchen floors (sweep, mop, wax) on a regular schedule, at least monthly.
- Purchase and replenish water softener salt and keep softener filled.
7. Set-Up & Events
- Set up and take down tables and chairs as required for church use. (Outside groups and regular renters are responsible for their own setups.)
- Work with the Minister, Music Director, and staff to prepare for special and seasonal events.
- Provide support and security for weddings, funerals, concerts, dinners, rentals, and rehearsals as required.
- Some events may require attendance outside regular hours and are paid separately.
8. Signage & Communication
- Update church signs as requested by the Administrator.
9. Seasonal / Periodic Tasks (Fall / Spring / Summer)
- Shut off or open exterior water taps seasonally.
- Pour drain cleaner into sewer line (water heater room) as scheduled, at least annually.
- Turn boiler on/off seasonally.
- Strip and wax tile floors in Ballantyne Hall as scheduled, at least annually (frequency to be confirmed).
This position is 25 hours per week at a starting salary of $24.00 per hour.
